Why photos fade

Light, heat and humidity. A photo framed on a sunny wall or stored in a hot shed fades faster.

Colour prints from the 1960s to 1980s fade unevenly, so they drift pink, red or orange. Black and white prints lose their blacks and the detail in faces.

What we do

We work on a digital copy. We restore the blacks, whites and mid-tones, correct the colour so skin tones look natural, and clean up dust and specks.

If detail has faded away completely, we can’t bring it back. Your quote will say what’s possible.

Look after the original

Display the restored print and keep the original somewhere cool, dark and dry.

Common questions

Can a very faded photo be restored?

Usually, if some detail is left. Send a phone snap and we’ll tell you what to expect before you pay.

Why has my colour photo turned pink?

The dyes in older colour prints fade at different rates. We correct the colour cast.

Can you put the colour back?

If it’s almost gone, we can colourise it. The colours are an approximation unless you tell us what they were.
